Lawn grasses that will grow well in N. California?
My dog has a severe grass allergy to our lawn (Scotts Turf Builder Tall Fescue Mix) and has to take anti-histimes every day for it. I'm getting an allergy test done on him in hopes of finding some other type(s) of grass to plant that he is not allergic to.
The standard N. California regional allergy test will include: Bermuda, Meadow Fescue, Red Top, Johnson, Brome, Cultivated Rye, and Wild Rye.
There are 14 other types of grass that they can test for, but I would have to pay extra to test any of these. Can you tell me if any of the following would work as LAWN GRASS IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA? We are in a moderately dry climate near San Jose, CA. I would like to test as many options to hopefully find one that will work for my dog, but I don't want to waste my money on unnecessary tests.
Sweet Vernal, Orchard , Perennial Rye, Timothy, Common Reed, June (Kentucky Blue), Velvet, Cultivated Oat, Cultivated Wheat, Meadow Foxtail, Bahia, Canary grass, Couch, Sudan grass, Salt grass
I'm in N. Cal. too. I don't know about lawns but another option to consider is yarrow (Achillea) as a lawn. It's a perennial herb and it's drought tolerant which is great since we've hardly had any rain this year. You have to mow before it flowers so you don't have to worry about bees. It has feathery foliage and is soft underfoot. It can handle full sun and in some spots can grow under pines, although it's not as lush there.
Perhaps you can do a little research and see if it will work for you and your dog. You can go by a nursery and pick up a few and see how your dog responds to it. First try it without the flowers and then let it flower and see if that makes a difference.
For additional information, I would email the San Marcos Growers (the first link) and inquire about it as they have first hand experience with it. You can buy seed in bulk to sow off the internet and through some better garden centers in your area.
