I have a good friend whose boyfriend is going to graduate from welding school next year. Since I'm an artist, she wants to buy a black welder's helmet and have me hand paint a custom design on it. No problem.
I've researched online and found out that welding helmets are primarily made of fiberglass or a poly resin mixture ... and people that have hand painted them have done it with polyurethane paint ... but that's all they say.
Wouldn't you need to clear coat the final work and if so with what? Since you'd assume he'll be working in a hot, flamable environment, the kind of paint and clear coat you use would have to be safe ...
Does anyone have any tips or suggestions on where to start on this project ... what materials to use ... and how to do it make the end product as safe as possible?
Go to your local hobby shop like Hobby Town is a good one. Look for radio controlled car paints...The paint is for plastic's,lexan,and poly carbonates.(It will say it on the bottle or can) The paint flexes a little bit so it doesn't chip or crack.or peal..Awesome choices in colors of paints. To name one maker...Pactra among others....Works really good in airbrushes....No need for base coats and if you want to clear coat it..... they have that as well. Make sure that the surfaces you are painting are clean and free of oil. The paint dose not contain lead or CFC's!
your painting this helmet is not going to cause injury or death!.....Just make sure the paint is dry before you use it!
Tip: Paint in well ventilated area's! A fan will help too... Good luck!
