im having trouble with the rod sticking ( i panic all the time lol ) but all i need ta know is this
lets say i stick the rod ok if i take the electrode holder out it will arc it and the groves will mess up BUT i was wondering if i pick up the plate im working on from the table im working on and THEN take out the holder will it still arc the holder? i weld at jefferson highschool in tampa fl btw and its my first week so bare with me .
Assuming that you have the ground clamp hooked to the workstation, and are grounding through the work table, then yes, lifting the piece from the table will break the circuit, and subsequently removing the rod from the rod holder will not cause any arcing. (Be careful, the work-piece will likely be very hot!)
If there is a power switch for the welder nearby, you'd usually be best to simply lift the work-piece off of the table by the now stuck rod, and then turn off the switch with your other hand (assuming you're practicing on small, relatively light weight pieces). At that point you can set the work back down, and simply bend the rod back and forth to un-stick it, turn the machine back on, and be on your way. I normally did that without ever taking the rod out of the rod-holder.
Switching off the power is really your only option if your ground clamp is connected directly to the work-piece. Removing the clamp would break the circuit, but you will then get arcing between the clamp and the work--also not desirable.
Note that lifting the work from the table could cause arcing between the work and the table, which may or may not be a big deal depending on your instructor's preferences; if it's a problem, just learn to quickly hit the power switch.
