I went to menards 2day to find a nice welding machine. I look to the right and see torches and as look at some of the descriptions, apparently you can buy some welding rods, heat em up, and apply this to metal like a soldering gun.
Have any of you guys had experience with this? And how thick of metal can you weld?
That type of welding is called oxyacetylene welding. It also can be done with MAPP gas. Oxyacetylene is a good process for clean steels and cast iron, but it doesn't usually work well with non ferrous metals. Oxyacetylene welding can be tricky to pick up, but it does give good quality welds, especially for mild steels and cast iron. Higher alloy steels will tend to have increased porosity in the welds with higher carbon contents and addition of alloying agents. It's most similar in process to TIG or GTAW welding, which is considered one of the more difficult forms of welding. The strength of the weld is generally considered about the same as wire, or MIG welding. If you're looking for ease of operation, I would recommend MIG or Stick (SMAW) welding as the weld qualities are good for most people's uses, and there is more flexibility as to alloys welded. If you plan on welding lots of high precision things, or primarily non ferrous metals, TIG would be good to learn.
