There is a man and he wants to marry a woman. In order to do that he must passher father's test. The test is as follows. There is a light plate with three switches on it. Way down the hall down the stairs and around the corner is a room with a single light bulb in the ceiling. One of the three light switches turns on a single light bulb in that room. The other two are dead circuits. The man may turn on and off as many switches as he likes but once he goes down to see if the bulb is on he cannot go back and try another. No one else can tell him if its on or off.

The first answer is incorrect because he needs to know WHICH one it is. Just because the light would beon doesn't mean that he knows which switch turned it on.

Turn on switch 1 for several minutes. Turn it off, then turn on switch 2, then go see.
If the bulb is on, it is worked by switch 2.
If it is off but warm, it is worked by switch 1.
If it is off and cold, it is worked by switch 3.
