Why does my 3 yo son keep waking up with Hives?
For the past couple days my son wakes up from naps and from sleeping at night with hives either on his arms or legs and today he woke up and they are all over his stomach. He naps on the couch so I washed the couch cussion covers and sleeps in his bed so I washed his sheets and blanket. I thought maybe laundry detergent so switched back to our old one but he still woke up today with them.
It could be the laundry soap. They don't clear up automatically. The immune system goes into over drive after a reaction like this and it can take a week or more after switching back to the old soap to see an improvement. Doctors usually recommend anti-histamines for an allergic reaction, but there is no dosing information for three year olds on the box. You need to contact your pediatrician and see what they recommend and what dose he should be given. It is too easy to give a small child an overdose of anti-histamine and that is why the FDA removed all dosing information, so parents have to contact their pediatrician for the information. DOSE CAREFULLY and exactly as the doctor recommends.
Keep in mind that it could be something else, like a food that could be causing the reaction. Keep track of everything he eats until you get this under control. He could be getting a reaction to something he was not previously allergic to, which is why it is important to keep track of all his food.
