I have a single-pole switch that powers a ceiling fan. The power source comes to the fan and is interrupted by the switch. I'd like to add a single-pole switch right next to the current one (I'll have to install a bigger box). How do I wire the second switch off the same power source while still having the switches operate independently (the new switch will power can lights in our bedroom)? I have a feeling I can connect to the power coming to the existing switch but I want to make sure I know how to connect it properly. Thank you.
You can wire the second switch by the following method . Take the power lead into the box and disconnect it from the first switch. Take two additional black wires and marrett them together with the power wire. one of these wires now goes to the first switch that you had sisconnected and the second wire becomes the power to the new switch. Now you take the whites from the original box and do the same except you are only adding one white and running it to the new box. Now when you bring your new 14/2 wire into the new box you marrett the two whites together and you take the black wires and put one to each of the switch terminals and there you have it, your in business.
