I can't get a dimmer switch to work.
I have looked at pictures, diagrams, signed books out of the library, asked for help, tried different combinations, but I can't get the dimmer switch to work. I even went to the store and bought a new one, just so I could have instructions, but it made no difference.
Here is how it is wired now: The black power source attaches in a box to the black switch. The black switch goes to the rotary dimmer black. The other rotary dimmer black goes to the black which goes back to the box, where it connects to the black going to the chandelier. Both chandelier wires are black. The other black chandelier wire goes to the white going back to the box, where it attaches to the white going to the panel.
This may be important: In the box, all the whites are connected and all the blacks are connected with nuts. The coppers are all connected to each other and the green screw. The switch is not between the light and the panel, they are all in the same box.
I don't understand why there is a black switch and a dimmer. And I don't understand about everything being in the same box. Is the dimmer in the ceiling with the light fixture? Normally a hot wire (black) feeds the dimmer from the panel. The other dimmer wire goes to the black feeding the light fixture. The other light fixture wire connects to the white neutral wire which then goes back to the panel without stopping at any switches. So your hot wire from the panel stops in the dimmer and then starts there again to go to the light fixture. Feel free to email me. I think I can help you out.
