I tried to replace the combination light switch/electrical outlet that's in my bathroom. When I connected it (the same way as the previous receptacle that was there), I was unable to get power or the circuit kept breaking. When I Kept trying to get it to work, the slowly deteriored cloth covering just came off two of the wires. I'm afraid that If I don't cover these wires with something, maybe electrical tape, that I wont be able to turn the power back on for that area of the house. Will electrical tape do the trick until the house can be rewired? Will I be able to connect my combination switch?
Old wiring can be a head ache and if you have the old cloth covered romex or even bx it is sometimes a pain to work with. I suggest that you make sure you are hooking it up properly and then get some shrink tube to wrap the wires back as far back as you can and then apply a layer of black tape over that. Tape alone os not good enough.
We have seen thousands of these types of wiring applications in our work and we use black, white, and red shrink tube rated at 600 volts. If your wiring os to short and you can not connect it you may need to call a professional out to be safe.
