I want to make a battery powered USB charger similar to the minty boost kit on http://www.ladyada.net/. Their kit only outputs 500mA and I've found that for faster charges, the higher the amperage the better(I have a 1 amp quick charger). Looking on the web, I've found a DC voltage regulator (http://focus.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/tps61030.pdf) that puts out 5 volts at 3.6 amps and am wondering if this would be *too* powerful. It is my understanding that the iPhone wall charger only puts out about 1 amp. Would this burn out my phone or would it draw only the amount of current it needs to charge?
In general, a device on a powered circuit only draws the current it needs. To avoid damaging the equipment you should provide voltage at the range it needs and provide the minimum amount of current it needs.
USB spec is only 500mA. So unless it's signaled, a device may not even attempt to draw more than that much. I don't know how to get an iphone to draw more current.
