I have an old fridge that doesn't cool off very well. There is a label on the back that says "134a". I've got several cannisters of 134a refridgerant and connecting hose for recharging the a/c in my car. It's a simple male/female connection between the car and the recharge hose.
I looked everywhere on the cooling system of the fridge and I could not find any sort of fitting that looks like it would accept the fitting for recharging a vehicle with 134a. There were 2 copper tubes that were crimped off.
Is it possible to recharge the system of a refridgerator? I have the equipment to solder with propane, mapp gas, and oxy/acetylene; and can get silver solder if it's needed to solder on a fitting.
What you need is to install a bullet line tap. The system is a closed system and is " not serviceable" As you have already discovered.

Simple install. The also make solider line taps, which most prefer to use.
You need a vacuum pump to pull a vacuum then recharge to mgf specs.
Generally when the are not cooling well, it dirty coils, dirty fan balde, or a bad thermostat. I would suspect dirty coils maybe the cause. Its pretty rare for a fridge to "spring" a leak as it a closed system. Meaning there are no service ports. You might try a good cleaning of the coils first, clean the fan motors blade, watch the fan motor spin, if is pretty slow, that would also be a source of poor cooling performance. And the motor in that case should be replaced. I doubt is low on refrgas, as that compressor would overheat pretty quickly andt would shut off on compressor overload. Remember air flow is key as the air that passes over the coils is what cools the freon and the freon is what cools the compressor.
