Question about leaking petcock and rubber / nylon / neoprene washers?
Hello. I have a 150cc scooter. The petcock screws onto a hollow bolt that is permanently fixed (welded) to the bottom of the gas tank. The hollow bolt rests on top of a black, rubber-like washer inside the nut on the top of the petcock. This washer is faulty, allowing gasoline to leak out through the threads.
I don't know what type of material this washer is made of (rubber, nylon, neoprene, etc.). I was told by a shade-tree mechanic that gasoline eats up rubber, so I am thinking that it may not be best to replace this washer with a rubber one.
Question: What type of washer should I get to replace the faulty one? (Rubber, nylon, neoprene, etc.)
Lola, I know that rubber gets brittle with age.
The thing is, this is a 2008 scooter.
And it's not brittle. It appears very new in condition. It was overtightened at the factory (presumable). This tore the washer around the edges.
Neoprene does OK with motorfuels,,,and is usually easiest to find.
Viton or Buna would be better.
On many of those type petcock connections an O-Ring will work in place of a flat washer.
All depends upon the specific configuration of the actual mating surfaces involved.
Lots of bikes have used that type connection.
Honda ,,perhaps most of all.
You could Try to find a replacement at a local dealership.
Getting them to Help you ,,,without knowing a specific bike model,,,that's another matter.
Sometimes ya Luck into a decent person at a bike Shop who knows what he's doing & willing to help.
