i want to replace the regular light switch in my room with one that i can use to dim the lights, the one that is on the wall right now is just the regular rectangle kind like this http://www.homesteadertrailer.com/assets/images/features/light_switch.jpg
If your breakers aren't marked in your breaker box. Turn on light and turn the breakers off one at a time until your light goes out and leave that one off until the change is done. Simply unscrew the plate, then unscrew the old switch.
Pull it out until you can get to the wires. There should only be two wire to the switch, one is your lead the other is the one that goes to light which is the load. There will be other wires in there that have a wire nut on them, leave them alone if possible.
Some of the older switches you simply unscrewed and pulled off the wire. The newer ones have the wire going into the back of the switch (except mobile homes, they can and are usually differing greatly) If you have the ones the wire goes directly into the box, take a small screw driver and insert the end of it into the slot right beside the wire. Push on it, sometimes they are stuck from sitting so long so you may have to use some force. But once you feel the click, keep it pushed in and pull the wire out. Repeat on the other wire
The new box will have two holes in the back that you simply push the wires back into. Then get all the wires back in the box, and put the switch back in. (Dimmer switches are generally a little larger and need more coercing to get back into the hole. Once you have it back in go ahead and turn the power on and check it. Look back into the box, on both sides of the switch, make sure there are no sparks. If there is, it is two wires touching and you need to pull it out and regroup your wire, (first turn off the electricity)
If there are no sparks you done a great job, just go ahead and put the cover on. Then go grab a cup of coffee for a job well done.
