Okay, I am by no means an expert on materials of any sort. I have some thick leather gloves, sleeves, and an apron (all used for welding). They are currently a tan color and a rough texture. Is there any way to make them black and smooth?

Edit: I received the equipment from someone who used to weld. I do not weld, but I can put the material to good use if I can change the finish.
Most leatherworking suppliers have books and materials for finishing leathers,But I have to ask,I'm a welder, and why would you go through all that to be ruined by cuts and scrapes and burns and sparks?
