Hybrid System Inverter

Hybrid System Inverter
Another place vehicles lose alot of energy?

Everyone who knows about hybrids or electric vehicles knows the term "regenerative breaking." I was thinking, what about using magnets and some iron or whatever as a shock absorber system, then send the current generated to an inverter or whatever to charge the battery? Has this been thought of? did I give away a really good Idea on yahoo answers? are there other places where energy could be reabsorbed?

The energy converted to heat through the use of springs or torsion bars (you'll want to replace those as well, since a great deal of the suspension's work occurs there as well) and shocks/struts is more signficant that most people think, and an attempt to use a simple magnet based generator system would require some huge magnets in order to recover a substantial portion of the lost energy and continue to be effective at controlling a vehicle's vertical motion through the field's mechanical resistance. From that perspective, it probably wouldn't be very practical. If nothing else, the mechanics of this design would likely increase the "unsprung weight" considerably -- and you never want to do that if you want to enhance vehicle handling characteristics.

For my part, I'd rather see the U.S. do a half decent job of maintaining its roads such that there wouldn't be quite so much energy to recover from that source! I compare the atrocious condition of some of our interstate highways to equivalent "A roads" in many European countries and cry.
