How to engrave stainless steel at home?

I was just wondering if engraving steel is the sane as engraving stainless steel, as I though the latter is slightly stronger? If so, would it be easy to purchase acid etching ink from any crafts store? I'm from the uk, is there a substitute if I cannot find any (I've never heard of it before!) thanks. I'm looking to engrave a dog tag pendant. I was initially wanting to buy a silver one however I heard this is more difficult to engrave (am I right?) so instead I'll purchase a stainless steel one if I can engrave this in the same way as the above tutorial says. Thanks!
