Wiring question: I took out a ceiling fan and put in a light-only, now I have 2 switches, 1 for the light, 1?
for the old fan, so the switch for the old fan part has a red and a black both hot, red top black bottom, I remember the red was the went to the fan as its hot line which I just capped off and put in the box in the ceiling...all I want to do is make an outlet in the place of the switch, can just put an outlet there? How would it be wired, or do I have to fish out the white (it's bundled because it's a 3 swtich plate). thanks
electrician house call: $200
You should be able to wire a pigtail from the black wire to the outlet and yes you do have to fish the white wire out. Run a pigtail from the white bundle to the outlet. The black wire goes to the smaller of the two slots in the outlet, the white wire goes to the longer of the two slots and a bare ground wire (which should also be in the box) goes to the round slot in the outlet.
