As a general rule, any use of an extension cord is less safe than plugging a cord into the wall directly.
If you do use an extension cord, make sure that the extension cord is at least as thick (if not thicker) as the cord you are extending, and choose as short of a length as you are able. The thickness of a wire indicates how much current can be pulled through the cord. If you use a thinner extension cord, you may be trying to draw more current than your extension cord can handle, which increases the heat released by the cord and creates a fire hazard.
