Critical angle & total internal reflection (TIR)
TIR occurs only when light travels from a higher-index medium (refra. index = n1) into a lower-index medium (refra index = n2).
Total internal reflection does not occur when light propagates from a lower-index to a higher-index medium.
The smallest angle of incidence for which total internal reflection will occur at the higher index/lower-index interface is called the critical angle, given by
sin (qc) = n2 / n1 >>> where n1 > n2 .
