How to install light switch, in shed, with power cord runnging from house.?
My current set up has an extension cord running from the house into the shed and then into my hanging lights. I want to install a wall switch to control the lights from inside of the shed. What hardware is needed, and is it even possible to install a wall switch on a power cord supply.
Use a heavy duty extension cord and cut the female end off and insert it into a metal exterior type switch box. Notice you will have three wires. The green one is the ground wire, hook it up to the metal switch box to ground the box. Notice the white wire, it is the neutral leg of the AC power outlet. break this wire at the switch. Hook the white wire from the cord to one side of the switch and the other side of the switch to the light. The third wire is black, it is the hot wire. Hook this wire directly to the light on the opposite side as the white wire from the switch.
With this set up, you are essentially breaking the circuit by opening the neutral leg of the cord when you turn the switch off. It is the safest way to set up a circuit like this from a cord that plugs into the wall.
