What are BGA solder ball connections?
I was always told Solder balls were a bad thing, but it appears they are necessary with BGA? I'm not really sure what BGA is, so an explanation of this would be good too.
BGA = ball grid array
It is a method of connecting a device like a large semiconductor integrated circuit to a circuit board. The device manufacturer provides a package with a carefully controlled size of solder ball at each terminal. The boars manufacturer makes the circuit board with an array of contacts that match the balls on the device. The device is precisely placed on the board and the board is heated to melt the solder balls so the device is soldered to the board.
Uncontrolled solder balls are bad because if they are formed unintentionally they are not well connected to the solder joint and may come loose and cause short circuits.
