Hot water is on and cooker works but now there's no heating?
I have a glowworm gas boiler. The heating was fine until yesterday. Everything on the boiler is set as it should be and the pilot is on. The boiler fires up when the hot water tap is turned on and hot water comes out but all the radiators are dead. There is a panel above the boiler and there are two lights, one says heating on and is lit 'green' and the other says 'alarm' and is lit red, We also have a small thermostat on the wall (RC5)and the timer is set ok but I can't get it set at higher than 15 degrees centigrade. Whenever I set it to a higher temperature it just drops back to 15. Is there a problem with the thermostat or should I be worried about the alarm light. Either way, how do I get the heating to work? It's freezing in here!
I suspect you have a problem with a diverter valve, which is not opening to let the central heating water heat up. I don't know if this is a combi boiler or a balanced flue. If it is a balanced flue type, the valve I am talking about will be in the airing cupboard by the hot tank. These are motorised valves, and often dont open when you want them to. You can open them manually by sliding a lever on the side of the valve to the open position and pushing it into a little notch once it is open. As for the thermostat, it seems like it is faulty, so try it with the boiler on constant setting to see if it will overide the stat. Hope this helps.
