Amp Single Pole
What would cause the main breaker of a house to trip?
Power comes from a telephone pole to a smaller power where the meter box (replaced several years ago) is, the underground to the house and garage. The garage still had power.
No other breakers tripped on the house's 25 year old 200 amp service.
The are 12 15 amp single pole, 8 20 amp single pole, 7 20 amp double pole, and 2 30 amp double pole breakers.
I know that the main can trip, even if the others don't, when enough breakers are handling less than their rated current(i.e. if 20 or more are each pulling 10 amps), but we really only have 2 refrigerators, 1 freezer, a water heater(also replaced several years ago), and a well pump. A fridge and freezer are on the same circuit, and the water heater(30 amp breaker) and pump(20 amp breaker) have their own breakers.
It was about 6 pm, 10 degrees Fahrenheit outside, but no electric heat was not on. Heat was provided by a wood stove and gas heaters.
You have described 98% of the 200 amp panels in the US today. It is not uncommon to have enough breakers to add up to 3 or 4 hundred amps if all of them were operating at full capacity. This will never happen. You could not plug in and operate that many appliances, and why would you.
The main breaker is just like any other breaker. It is a thermomagnetic device. It will operate (trip) with an overload (too many amps and it heats up) or a strong and fast magnetic field. (a short).
If your main breaker trips more than twice, be prepared to replace it.
The likely cause of this trip is an appliance with a compressor that would not start and acted like a short circuit. Cold weather can make normal motors (compressor or pump motors) freeze up and act like a short circuit.
