I have a 220 volt 30 amp circuit breaker from house main to garage.?
I have shut the garage main power off in the garage but the circuit breaker In the house main still trips, but it takes about 10 to 30 minutes each time I reset it. Could it be a bad breaker or something else? How do I test for bad breaker?
Do you have access to an ammeter or amp-probe? This will tell you if there is a load on the breaker or not. If there is a load on the breaker then there is a failure (short) somewhere in the feed from the house to the garage causing the breaker to trip. If you do not have such an instrument, try the tests below.
First Test: With the house breaker OFF, disconnect the feed from it. Then turn it back on. If it continues to trip, you have a bad breaker. If not, go to the second test below.
Second Test: If you have a way to shift the feed from the present breaker to another one of the same amperage (or less but *not* more), do that and see if it still trips. If it does the line is defective. If not, very likely the breaker is defective. Note that if the garage power is truly turned off, there should be no load at all on the feed such that even a 15A breaker should hold just fine.
Make whatever repairs are necessary based on what you learn. Either the breaker or the line.
Now, if the house breaker is a GFIC device, then without an amp probe, disconnecting it is the only valid test. If it stops tripping, you may have a ground leak somewhere - again a defective feed. You should not replace a GFIC device with a standard breaker.
Unless you are absolutely sure of what you are doing, leave this to someone who does, preferably an electrician.
